Interfacility Transport

The interfacility transport of critically ill newborns and children is highly specialized and is provided by transport teams trained and certified to provide this service. The transport teams are based at four Ontario paediatric healthcare centres: McMaster Children’s Hospital, Children’s Hospital of London Health Sciences Centre, Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ottawa, and The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids). In some circumstances, Ornge and Manitoba’s Child Health Transport Team provide support to ensure geographic coverage of the province.

The work of PCMCH’s Transport Committee is supported by sub-committees that focus on specific elements of the transport process. Together, the Committee, its sub-committees and other partners to work to improve the quality and safety of this system by collaborating with these facilities and agencies in developing and implementing evidence-based standards and guidelines; identifying and addressing service gaps; providing advice on health human resources and capacity building; and monitoring and evaluating system-wide quality improvement initiatives to inform system planning recommendations.
