Multimedia Resources Support Perinatal Care for 2SLGBTQIA+ People

Issue 5 | December 2023

In August, the Provincial Council for Maternal and Child Health (PCMCH) released two multimedia resources that individual perinatal care providers, teams and organizations can use to reflect on and take steps towards enhancing the quality and cultural safety of the care they provide to Two-Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (or Questioning), Intersex and Asexual (2SLGBTQIA+) individuals and families.

The first features 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals who received healthcare in Ontario during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum, sharing insights on their lived experiences. The second features a range of interdisciplinary healthcare professionals from across the province who champion inclusive and respectful perinatal care for 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals and their families. From both resources, healthcare providers will learn approaches to building trust, removing barriers to care and enhancing inclusivity, such as incorporating inclusive language into forms or ensuring that a pregnant 2SLGBTQIA+ person’s partner feels welcomed and engaged during healthcare visits.

These resources complement the Providing Inclusive, Affirming and Safer Perinatal Care to 2SLGBTQIA+ Individuals tip sheet, which was released in March. Access these resources here.
